Christine Frerichs makes intimate observational paintings of interior scenes in her home and studio. Each work is a result of repetitive sittings – observing and painting what remains and what changes over weeks, months or years. The evidence of love relationships and relationship to self, are felt through the order and disorder of objects left behind. Frerichs often works in series, and her medium is oil on wax coated paper, linen and canvas. Carefully considered compositions, layered textural surfaces and delicate shifts in color and light - her paintings reward prolonged viewing.
Christine Frerichs (b. 1979 in Los Angeles, CA) received her BFA from the University of Arizona (Tucson) in 2002 and her MFA from University of California, Riverside in 2009. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States including in Los Angeles, New York, Tucson and Chicago. She has been the recipient of the Painting’s Edge Residency and Fellowship, a Change Inc. Artist Grant, and the Maxwell H. Gluck Fellowship. Her work as been published in Artforum, art ltd., ARTPULSE, the Los Angeles Times, Two Coast of Paint, and New American Paintings, among others. She has taught at Otis College of Art and Design, UC Irvine, Long Beach City College, and is currently Assistant Professor of Art at East Los Angeles College.
